President's Letter

It is hard to believe, but here we are in the second half of 2022. It still feels like summer, but we are quickly headed into fall, and a lot will be happening, so please keep in touch! So much has happened in the first half of 2022.

We hosted an informal Founders Day event at Coronado Brewing Company. The April luncheon was very well attended at the SAE house.

Brother Ryan Thorsen (the new proprietor of Mister A’s) was our guest speaker. He captivated the roomful of undergrads and alumni while chronicling his path to the top of one of San Diego’s most iconic restaurants. We enjoyed a night at Petco Park for Brews, Bros & Baseball in June. This is becoming one of my favorite evenings, and if you haven’t been to one, please come and check it out next summer! In July, we celebrated a Brews with Bros event at Culture Brewery in Solana Beach.

Some new faces popped up, and bonding with brothers from across the realm was great! Our next luncheon is fast approaching, so sign up if you haven’t already! We’re so excited that Ted Leitner will be our guest speaker at the August 18th luncheon!

Uncle Teddy is one of those people who rarely needs an introduction, and he is synonymous with San Diego sports and a Hall of Fame Broadcaster! You can make your reservation at https://www.saesd.org/events.

I traveled to Chicago for the 84th ΣΑΕ National Leadership School held on August 8-11. I was selected to be a facilitator this year and look forward to meeting and working with brothers from across the nation. We provided three scholarships for leadership school (undergrad brothers Caeden King, Soren Brown, and Nick Ashton will be attending.)

Our alumni association is up for several national awards this year. Keep your fingers crossed!

We are hosting the ΣΑΕ Leadership Transition Forum on August 27th. This conference brings newly elected officers from local chapters together to connect, break bread, discuss best practices and challenges, and hear from well-respected and successful ΣΑΕ alumni who discuss leadership and their role in their personal, fraternal, and professional lives. We are honored to have Brother Jeff Byroads (CA TH ’74) as our keynote speaker. The San Diego Area ΣΑΕ Alumni Association was awarded the best “Special Event” award by ΣΑΕ National for this forum.

We’re excited to see football at SnapDragon Stadium this fall! September 3rd marks the beginning of a new era, and we look forward to tailgating and watching winning football games with the brothers. SDSU Homecoming will be on November 5th. Stay tuned for tailgating announcements for time and location.

Our last luncheon of the year will feature one of our favorite speakers, SDSU Basketball Head Coach Brian Dutcher! We are waiting for the date as Dutch is putting together practice schedules and will notify us when that is set. We expect this luncheon to take place in the October-November time frame. Keep an eye out for the announcement!

We are exploring having the Holiday Party at The San Diego Yacht Club on December 3rd from 2:30-5:30. We plan to support Toys for Tots again, so please remember to bring an unwrapped toy to donate! Since we did not ask for membership these past few years, the Holiday Party will be a “pay as you go” event. We are working with catering to create an affordable venue and will provide details as they come available.

As we head towards 2023, we plan to implement a membership program that will provide different levels of access and benefits. We plan to continue the events you have become accustomed to (quarterly luncheons, Founders Day Dinner, Holiday Party) while adding new and different events to attract new members to the alumni association. Your membership is vital in allowing us to implement our plans. It is imperative for the health of our fraternity that there are strong alumni associations across the realm that not only provide an avenue of ΣΑΕ to their alumni members but also provide help and support to their undergraduate chapters. We are fortunate to be members of one of the strongest alumni associations in the country, and it is no surprise that we have two solid chapters here in San Diego. That, of course, could not be possible without your year-in and year-out support.

Thank you in advance for your continued membership and participation! I look forward to seeing you soon. Phi Alpha!
